Demon Hunters in Japan

“I have desecrated churches, I have trampled on the graves of the hallowed dead. I have sought out and indulged in every vice known to humankind. I have stared death in the face and never once flinched. Now I have set my sights on Japan. I have done exhaustive research: the abandoned and haunted places, the ruined temples, the cursed places shunned by the living. I want to break through the boundary separating the living from the dead. I want to awaken those spirits, angry or diseased. I want to free them from their fetid dungeons and unleash their anger."

Sebastian frightened us. But we were in search of adventure in those days and we willingly agreed to follow him into the dark heart of Japan. We bought into his pitch that we would be unlike any of the other students backpacking around Asia that summer. We would not be tourists, taking a picture-postcard tour of the sights. We would be doing something unique and possibly dangerous.

We started the journey in high spirits. None of us really believed that we could awaken spirits or break through the boundary between the living and the dead.

We were wrong.
